I'll try that, thankyou :D And that scarf looks like a really great project (looks just the thing my mum might like for her birthday, which is thankfully in November so I have plenty of time to practice!).

I'll have another go at granny squares beore trying anything more complex I think, and just take it slow. I tried to crochet a bathmat out of old t-shirts a while back, and thanks to my terrible tension, I ended up with a hat.
