My brother and sister-in-law have returned from Surabaya safely. They were there for her brother's wedding and they came back with a tale of horror from the airlines.
They leave from Ottawa and arrive in Toronto (via Air Canada) with no problems at all. Unfortunately, they discover that Dave (my bro) and Christine (his wife) have no seating designation and AC has oversold the flight from Toronto to Beijing. So Terry and Cathy (her parents) refuse to travel without them and give up their tickets. They manage to arrange a flight to Surabaya via Vancouver and Hong Kong.
Now, here's where things get interesting. In Vancouver they end up with the opposite problem from Toronto. Now Dave and Christine have seats but Terry and Cathy do not. Cathy tries to convince Dave and Christine to go on alone because someone has to be at the wedding, and then promply bursts into tears. Now you have to understand that Cathy is a hard as nails nurse and NOTHING phases her. This woman could stare down Unicron himself, but she's tired and stressed, and she bursts into tears, at which point Christine starts crying too.
The crying seemed to help (no that was NOT their plan) and they manage to get onto a flight to Hong Kong without any problems. However, when they land they are stopped by security because, apparently, the guards there have never seen an epi-pen (Terry needs it for bee stings). They have to give over the pen and all their papers to this guy from Air Canada so that he can check them out. And he promptly dissappears. They now have 15 minutes to catch their flight and there is no sign of the AC guy. Thankfully some guy from Cathay comes by and helps them out, they find the AC guy and their papers and RUN to catch their flight, with the Cathay guy getting them through all the security checkpoints.
Before they can get on the plane, however, they have to get their luggage. Terry and Cathy's are there but Dave and Christine's are nowhere to be found. They find out later that their luggage had gone to Surabaya on the original flight via Beijing.
Thankfully their visit was uneventful, the wedding was beautiful, and the trip back went exactly as planned.
You know, there's an old saying that "to err is human, to really foul up requires a computer." I would argue that no, the really foul up requires Air Canada.
