I'll tell you what happened to it. It died from disuse. It was thrown into a gutter and had the life kicked out of it.
Nowadays all anyone thinks about is themselves, and because the public is made up of jerks and assholes, we expect people to treat us like that. But here's the kicker. We decide to beat them to the punch and treat others badly before they can treat us badly, thus procreating the stereotype.
I've lately had the opportunity to walk down Sparks Street to and from work, and I am seeing the dregs of human society. But no, these people are not the homeless. The homeless are polite, and kind, and say please and thank you and how do you do. No, these dregs are dressed in business suits and are rushing off to government and private sector jobs.
They ride their bikes on Sparks Street (even though there are clear signs to walk all bikes) and they blame the pedestrians they hit. I have seen women chew men out for holding doors open. I have seen cars veer towards puddles so as to splash pedestrians. I've seen taxis run very red lights and nearly hit people, and I've seen women with baby strollers jaywalk into heavy traffic (and then blame the drivers for near accidents)
I've seen spitting, and gum throwing, and even a man in a suit peeing against a wall.
There are those who go postal on baristas because the server gets an order slightly wrong, because the customer wouldn't get off their cell or didn'e enunciate, or ordered wrong. I've seen people purposefully allow elevator doors to close when someone is calling for it to hold.
I've heard people in restaurants talking loudly on cell phones about very personal matters (like the woman who was talking about her genital herpes ... in detail). Obviously the concept of inside voices and appropriate topics hold no meaning when a phone is involved.
The world has become classless. We treat people like shit, then they go one to treat others the same way, and the cycle continues.
All it really takes is to be couteous to others. Be kind. Take complements as they were intended. Hold doors open for those who need it, and accept with grace. Treat the servers and cashiers like a loved one, instead of a slave. Say please and thank you.
And most importantly ... don't be an asshole!
