I also found it easier to start with pieces where the gauge and the tension aren't quite as important, like granny squares and straight crochet blankets and scarves.
This one (http://thechristmascraftcollective.blogspot.com/2010/10/simplest-scarf.html) is easy and the tension ins't quite as urgent as some other patterns.

I'll have another go at granny squares beore trying anything more complex I think, and just take it slow. I tried to crochet a bathmat out of old t-shirts a while back, and thanks to my terrible tension, I ended up with a hat.
