So I have curly hair. Like seriously curly hair. And there's a ton of it. Over the years I have had a love-hate relationship with it. I'm old enough to remember a time before proper conditioners, so as a child my mother had to try to tame my masses of hair with cream rise and a brush. And I hated it. My hair would tangle and knot terribly so the brushing was genuinely painful as my hair was being pulled. Finally we gave up and my mother had my hair cut off. I was maybe 10 or 11? And that was fine. It was the 80s, I could get away with a short afro type thing. But then the 90s happened and I wanted to grow my hair out, but again, there weren't any decent products for curly hair like mine - masses of incredibly fine, slippery, Mediterranean curls that were like ivy (it tangled around everything, including itself). I ended up getting the cruel nickname of Afro-Girl and my super power was that I could hold anything in my hair.

I finally had enough. I needed to do something about my curls but there was no way that I was going to cut it. So I found a very expensive stylist who claimed that he could help me. And he Permed. My. Hair! And it was great. I had the most beautiful spiral curls! And then it wasn't great. It started breaking and falling out in chunks. There was nothing to be done, I had to get it cut. And I spent the rest of the 90s with a mullet. After university I returned home and eventually discovered my mother's stylist.

She was a wonderful Portuguese woman who owned a shop with an Italian woman. They both had curly hair. And the woman who was doing my hair, well her daughter had hair just like mine. It was wonderful to finally have someone who knew what the hell they were doing. And with her, my hair finally started growing and now after 19 years my hair is now down to about mid-back when it's straightened and it brushes my shoulders when it's curly. I lose a good three to six inches to the curl.

So, this leads me to today. I'm still trying to find good products. Right now I'm using a combination of Mixed Chicks and Marc Anthony's Strictly Curls. It's doing pretty well though there are good days and bad. And now on to the main reason for the post. Last night I tried a new method to get the curls managed. Usually I use rag or foam curlers but those are hard to sleep in. So I have tried a new method - the twist out. This is a method intended for use on a far more textured hair, so mine has not turned out in any way like it's supposed to look, but it's still really nice!

And I have gotten so many complements! Now we'll see how long it lasts or if I'll have to do this daily.
