In continuation of the long silent 28 Smokescreens, I give you [livejournal.com profile] dragoness_e's request of Daring Smokescreen

It is a cut scene from “Life After Death” and is a death-fic (sort of) but I hope I did it justice. Any thoughts and/or comments would be much appreciated, even if it's to tell me that you really don't like it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Smokescreen sat with his back to the wall of his cell contemplating the restraining bolt on his chest. His solitude was broken when his radio came to life.

“Smokescreen?” Prowl asked. “Are you functional?”

“Functioning and awake,” he replied. “Primus! I can’t tell you how good it is to hear your voice. Who else is here? That lizard guy would only tell me that you wanted our radios on Secure Fifteen.”

“Everyone who was on the shuttle is alive and well,” Prowl replied. “We also have Windcharger, Wheeljack, Hound, Trailbreaker, Red Alert, and Mirage. Huffer’s here too, but he’s still offline. He’s in bad shape.”

Smokescreen nodded to himself before replying sadly, “I saw Mirage fall and Hound and Trailbreaker were with me when I … when I … Good Primus! We actually died didn’t we?”

“Yes,” Prowl replied simply. After a long pause he continued, “I need to know what happened, Smokescreen. I need to know what happened at Autobot City.”

Smokescreen took a long breath and blew it out slowly. “I guess you do, don’t you?” he said. After a long, silent moment he began to recall the events of that day.

“We didn’t see them coming until it was too late. It never occurred to any of us that they would hit us with our own shuttle. Hot Rod gave us our first warning, and it had barely been enough time. The shuttle, your shuttle, approached the City and next thing we knew it was spitting out Deceptions. I had no clue that so many bod- that so many people could fit into one of those things. They must’ve been crammed in there like sardines because they just kept coming and coming.

“Someone got inside and warned Blaster. Through the fist half of the battle he was transmitting a distress call on all channels asking for help from anyone who could hear it. Whoever got inside also managed to get the city closing but there were a number of us still outside the walls.

“I remember Bluestreak and Mirage were picking off Insecticons one by one from an upper doorway. ’Raj had them both covered with his cloaking field, but I guess there was a stray shot or something. It was like watching everything in slow motion. They both appeared, ’Raj pushed Blue back inside and took the full force of a shot from someone … I think it was one of the Seekers,” Smokescreen said quietly.

“He didn’t mention that,” Prowl said.

“He wouldn’t, would he?” Smokescreen replied.

There was a long period of silence before Smokescreen spoke again and Prowl allowed him time to mourn without prompting him to continue.

“Anyway, there were a few of us outside trying to keep the ‘Cons away from the City. We knew we were outnumbered and outgunned, but I think we were just hoping to stall them until help arrived from Cybertron. And then Devastator took to the field. He started ripping into the City like it was made of crêpe paper. He would have been bad enough, but out on the horizon I saw the other two gestalts, Bruticus and Menasaur. I don’t think I really thought about what I was doing. I just knew that those two would mean the end of all of us. We had received a call that the Aerialbots and the Protectobots were on their way, but they were still a good half-hour out.

“I’m guessing that they were waiting for Megatron’s order to join the fight because the gestalts just stood there for the longest time. Finally they started forward and I knew I had to take action. I wasn’t doing much good against the rest of the ‘Cons, anyway, so I decided to keep those two away from the City until Superion and Defensor arrived. In retrospect, I really wasn’t thinking,” Smokescreen added with a bitter chuckle.

“I remember hearing Red Alert yelling at me to get behind the walls, but I just transformed and sped off. I had to keep the gestalts distracted. At some point in my rush to get there I picked up Hound and Trailbreaker. I honestly don’t know what we were thinking; three of us against those two monsters … odd, I thought Hound was on the Moonbase with Prime?

“We approached the two and I started hitting them with smoke while Hound managed a hologram of Superion and Defensor. And through it all Trailbreaker was at my side, keeping me covered with his force field, just in case one of those two giants decided to step on us. I have no idea how he kept up with me, because believe me, I wasn’t going slow. Our makeshift plan actually worked for a while; we managed to turn them away from the City and it looked like everything was going to work out when something went wrong.

“I really think the fates were against us. I mean, just as things were starting to go our way they all went to the Pit. I think it was Menasaur who actually did it. Someone in there but have put two and two together and he kicked out; hit Trailbreaker right in the side and sent him flying into a cliff face. Then Hound’s hologram failed; it just sputtered and died. Last I saw, Bruticus was heading in his direction. I just kept making figure eights between their legs hoping that I was making enough smoke to keep them off Hound, hoping that they wouldn’t decide to start jumping around trying to find me.

“I … I think the last thing I remember was seeing that big foot coming right at me. I tried to swerve out of the way but he clipped me in the side. … I remember the world spinning out of control as I went flying and then the sudden stop as I landed in Bruticus’ hand. I was disoriented, rattled. I saw that Menasaur had grabbed Hound and was treating him like a … like a hacky sack. And then, just as I figured this had all been for nothing I saw two things that … well they almost made everything better. Defensor and Superion had arrived and off in the distance I saw the Decepticons running from Autobot City.

“Bruticus must have dropped me because I hit the ground hard. It must have been too much because when I opened my eyes I was here in this cell,” Smokescreen finished.

“You did well Smokescreen,” Prowl said. “I already spoke to Hound and Trailbreaker. They tell me that they arrived with Optimus Prime. I’m sure that he turned the tide, just as I’m sure that it wouldn’t have happened if you three hadn’t kept those two gestalts occupied.”

“Thanks, Prowl,” Smokescreen said quietly.
