Is it not possible to just buy a phone? I don't want a built in camera, computer, MP3 player, camcoder, internet provider, blue-ray disk player, or a personal shoe-shine boy! I just want a phone for emergencies and so that potential employers can contact me (cause Dad's really bad at passing on messages). I just need a phone! We survived without all the bells and whistles for so long, why do we NEED to have them now?

Is that really such a difficult to grasp the notion of a phone that's just a phone? Why can't I just have a phone that's a phone? Why do I need to have all these bells and whistles that I won't use? And yes, I was told that I NEED these crappy features. I tried to explain to the kid (he was 12, I think) that I have a digital camera, an MP3 Player and a PDA and that I didn't need them on my phone too. I tried to tell him that I just needed a device that would let me talk to people. I mean, honestly, if Bell would just stop removing all the pay phones I wouldn't even need a cell. The kid actually asked me what a pay phone was ... I could have cried.

Why is it that everytime I inform people that I don't have a cell they look at me like I'm a sociopath ... I don't want a cell!

Make the evil tech go away ... *sob*

I've got a nice, simple Nokia 6010 which is just a phone -- no camera, no real bells and whistles. I got it for, I think it was about 80 dollars all together from Cingular. It's one of their Go Phones that uses their Pay as you Go system. Meaning, I pay, say 25 dollars, and can use that to make calls. There's a charge of a dollar a day to activate the phone but that's deducted off the phone's balance and then after that all calls are 10 cents a minute, nationwide (I'm in the US, in case you're not) or free to others on Cingular network.

In my case, I can make a $25 card last about 2-3 months, depending on how many calls I have to make.

Thanks for that! I'll look into that phone and see if we have Cingular in Canada.

Does that happen that often here? I would think that enough Canadians don't have them that it wouldn't happen that often....

Europe, on the other hand.... they look at you as if you're a sociopath with five heads. Even if you're just visiting, you're expected to have a cellphone. Regardless of whether you're 6 or 96, you have a cellphone. It is somewhat terrifying.

Yeah, I noticed that in London ... All those little cell phone booths had been converted to Internet terminals. It was a little strange.

I saw a five year old talking on a cellphone in a small town we drove through in Latvia. It weirded me out.

Yes, plain ol cell phones do exist! (much to my husband's dismay, as he was hoping for something fancier)

We got a couple of phone's through Sprint, as emergency phones last year when I was in my third trimester of pregnancy. At that time, we also thought we were going to Korea, and would have to hand over the phone contract to our parents. Because of that, I insisted to just get the basic phones so my parents could also figure em out. Then it turned out we weren't going to Korea. *rolls eyes*

But yeah, most cell phone companies like Sprint will offer a free basic starter phone with the start-up of your plan. The fancier phones will cost more to buy in addition to the monthly plan. (PS... the 1 year/2 year plans also cost less per month in the long run over those pay-as-you-go phones)

Shop around various companies too before picking the one you like best.

Unfortunantly, it is status quo to have a cellular phone now days. Hell, I'm halfway across the world and I still have my phone. It has no service but it makes a great alarm clock. My phone now is my computer and a wireless connection

However, once I get back to the States, my phone will be reactivated. I hate that phone. It gets crap signal everywhere...except here where it has full bars. It's crazy.

I agree. You don't need the bells and whistles if you don't want them. I do have a camera phone but that's the only whistle. Though you should tell me where you found a phone that had a personal shoeshine boy...

Tell me about the phones!!!! I got a new one (Yes, with a camera and such!!) I was sat there with the phone in one hand and the instruction book in the other. My niece came in; she was 10 then, 11 now. “Let’s have a look.” She said. Press, press, press. “Here’s your video.” Me “Video?” “Here’s your sound recording.” Me “Sound recording????” I had only just got it to take a number……………Saw a cartoon in the paper that sums it all up. Guy in a phone shop buying a phone. Advert for what it could do. (Internet, MP3 player, shoeshine…) One of the assistants looks at the other and says. “He’s right, you can’t make a phone call on it!!!!”
