Spring in Ottawa

The river is beginning its spring thaw. Most of the surface is still frozen, covered with a thin sheet of ice and a deceptive coating of snow. The clear water is moving slowly and sluggishly, as if it’s still too thick, but it moves, and that’s enough for a the seagulls and ducks.
The birds splash in the water until an old man comes to sit on a bench by the riverbank. He pulls off his heavy gloves and reaches into a pocket, pulling out a sack of bird feed. With ancient, gnarled fingers he begins to throw food to the birds and is soon surrounded by gulls, ducks, pigeons, jays, cardinals, and tiny chickadees, all fighting for their share of the bounty.
A young couple enters the scene walking their dogs. The man and woman walk hand in hand while the dogs chase after each other barking happily, occasionally breaking off their game to chase a lone rabbit or squirrel. The man sweeps the woman up in a deep embrace, and begins to kiss her as if they are the only two beings in the world.
Two red speedboats make their way up the river, frightening the gulls, and sending them up into the sky, squawking like a choir of angry banshees. The men in the boats pull up to the shore, nod to the old man and smile at the young lovers then set about testing the ice for thickness and safety, ensuring that everything will be clear in time for the spring floods.
It’s spring in Ottawa and it is beautiful.
