I really need to get back on a diet. My knees are killing me and plus-sized clothing is just too expensive.

I've tried Weight Watchers an that didn't work. It's a good program, but I found the planning and counting too oppressive. And I know, there was the Core plan, but I don't have the self control needed to go on a low carb diet. I like bread too much and if you tell me I can't do something, that's when I want to do it. Also, the meetings were too dull. They weren't saying anything I didn't already know, and I was tired of the leaders. "Hi! I'm X and I'm your group leader! I've been a member since 2000 and I lost 30 pounds!" Yeah, 30 pounds is impressive, but if that's all you needed to lose to get to your goal weight, then how are you supposed to help those of us who need to loose 100 pounds. No, after three years of being with them, I could no longer justify paying people who weren't helping me lose.

I've been told that Herbal Magic is great, but I don't like the idea of taking supplements to lose weight. Oh, I know there's more to it than that, but still, there are the supplements, and herbal or not, I have a major problem with taking pills for that. So they increase metabolism and they depress my appetite, but healthy food and exercise will do the same thing. And then there's the cost. I can't justify the cost.

LA Weightloss just comes down to cost, so that's out too, and Jenny Craig requires you to eat their food. The mother of a friend of mine went on one of those programs years ago, and yes, she lost weight, but they were starving her. I know that if I only ate 1000 calories a day and exercized like a woman possessed, I'd lose weight too, but I'd also lose all of my friends because I'd turn into a mega bitch. ... I don't work well with others when I'm hungry.

So I've checked out my possibilities and I've come to a conclusion. I need to exercise more. I need to get off of my lazy butt and get out walking. We're not in a construction zone any more so I have no excuse, and the dog needs exercise too. And as for food, I've decided that my major problem isn't what I'm eating, it's how I'm eating. I need to control my portions, I need to graze through the day, and I need to eat all of my food groups. I need to get in my fruits and vegetables. There are many that I don't like, but the ones that I do, I really like, and their starting to come into season. Corn, brussle sprouts, winter squash, taro, sweet potatoes, yams ...

So starting today, I am making a change. God knows I need to do something.

Heh. If it wasn't for yoga at work I'd get next to no exercise.

You get to do Yoga at work? Hmmmm ... I should push for Yoga-time at TBS. I think we could all use it.

Have you looked into th GI diet? I've not explored it in depth myself but it focuses on keeping you blood sugar even which helps you from eating more than you ought to. So it's less about cutting food out and more about eating what you're supposed to, eating the right amounts<--so hard!) and eating it at certain times of day. And yeah, if you can eat small meals more often as opposed to 3 large ones you should definitely do that. It keeps you from waiting until you're absolutely starving and ready to eat everything in sight.

Hmmm, I'd hate to say this, but you should be careful about what vegetables you eat. Corn, sweet potatoes, winter squash and yams are all high in starch...in my meal plan they count the same as bread so they're something you'll have to be sure not to over do. And if you're buying fruit juice it's always good to check how many sugars it has. *nods nods*

Shoot for little victories every day!

Yeah, I've heard good things about the GI diet. I may take a look at the book if I can find it at my library. I have so many diet books that I can't justify buying a new one without looking into it first.

As for the veggies, yes they are high in carbs and sugar, but they are also full of vitamines and minerals that I'll need to stave off seasonal depression this winter. Unfortunately, I know that when I'm depressed I eat, so I need as many orange vegetables as I can get when it gets cold and grey. In summer I eat more dark green veggies. In winter the selection is just sad around here.

You don't need a diet book, you've already got the right idea. And don't worry about which vegetables you eat. It's more important that you are eating them instead of say, cake or candy, which are also high in carbs and sugar. Yes those vegetables are high in carbs and sugar but it's the good kinds. Carbohydrates AREN'T a bad thing.

One thing you should watch and I'm REALLY guilty in this area is soft drinks. Don't know how much you drink them but its amazing. Even the sugar-free ones are loaded with sodium which causes you to retain fluids, thus, more weight. Not to mention, your dentist will praise you.

D'OH!!!

Oh yes, the soft drinks are killers. I'm actually pretty good about them, though. When I do drink something other than coffee, it's water. But the problem is the fact that I'm drinking too much coffee and not enough water. I'm working my way back up to 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day, and limiting myself to two coffees and a cup of tea, but it's hard sometimes (yes, I'm a caffine addict).

i have had great luck with the thrive diet (by brendan braizer), and also dr. mcdougall's stuff and dr. furhman (sp?) eat to live program.

all excellent. all no processed foods, which i think is why it works so well! definitely feel much healthier after adjusting my diet to be like a hybrid of these three.
