13 December 2005 13:32So once again, Holywood has managed to piss me off. This time it's because of the upcoming Pocohontas movie, starring Colin Farrell and Q'Orianka Kilcher. It's called The New World, and is being billed as the true story of John Smith and Pocohantas. The movie was set to be release on Christmas day but may have been pushed back because they had to reshoot all of the love scenes between Smith and Pocohantas.
Let me reiterate, they had to reshoot the scenes where 30-year old Farrell was making out with 15-year old Kilcher! I'd seriously like to know what the fuck they were thinking, putting a 15-year old in that position. I mean really, didn't anyone stop to think that maybe, just maybe, this would be viewed as child porn? As child endagerment? But, hey, they're stupid asshats. I'm actually more pissed at Kilcher's parent/guardian/manager for agreeing to this int he forst place.
Also, my sense of historical accurracy is being severy angered by this movie in general. There is absolutely no historical proof that John Smith was ever involved with Pocohantas. And we have loads of historical records of the time, including the journals of both Smith and Roarke (the guy who eventually married Pocohantas).
I just wish that Holywood could get one thing historically accurate. The story is beautiful all on its own, without adding the urban legend of a love story. In my mind, this fits right up there with the claim made in 1492 (the true story of Christopher Columbus) that Columbus slept with Queen Isabella to get the funding.
Okay, I'm done now.
