I think that it's about time that I rethink my writing. I'm seeing far too many bad habits and poorly thought out stylings, and honestly, I think I'm floating toward just this side of bad!fic sometimes.
I normally don't plot out my stories becuse the few times that I have, the tale has nearly died. But at the same time, without a properly defined ending, I think some of my stuff is just going and going with nowhere to actually go. Really, it's a terribly bad habit, and if I want to get better at this, I have to break it. After all, I wouldn't run a game without it properly plotted out, so how is this any different?
I want to be able to write short fics, but lately, they are refusing to stay that way. I've received some very good advice on the subject of short fic writing from the good folks over at
onedeadbunny and I think I really need to take it. And there's also the writing thread on The Cell. Both those and other writing sites have really opened my eyes, and I think that I really need to stop being a bad turtle, and stop being lazy.
So what do I have in the works at the moment?
Thunder Crashes is the priority right now, since I only have a chapter or two left.
Metamorphosis and Life After Death are both ongoing and have to be completed.
Return to Darkness has stalled and needs to be put back on its tracks.
Book Reading Smokescreen, Jealous Smokescreen, and Dominant Smokescreen have all been claimed and must be written
I'm not quite as concerned about Vignettes, since that is on-going only by me, but I am going to aim for shorter pieces in that one. I need to learn to write short pieces because these epics are just too long. The hope is to have my slate clean by November so that I can get into NaNo properly with a series of 30 interconnected short stories.
So there we go ... And we'll see how it goes. Also, after all of this is done, I've decided to stop posting works in progress for the moment. I admit that posting each chapter as it goes along is a good way to ensure it gets finished, a committment of sorts, but at the same time, once the chapter has been posted, it's harder to go back and make major changes.
