So normally I don't give a rat's ass about the Miss America pageant. As far as I'm concerned they're all a bunch of Barbie doll wannabes with the collective brain power of two moth balls. And, judging by the ratings, I think that the majority of America agrees with me. After all, the ratings have been falling steadily, and what used to be a prime-time, network-aired event has been relegated to TLC.

This year, however, they decided to change things up a bit by allowing the folks over at TLC to make over the girls and bring them kicking and screaming into the 21st century. I will admit that it piqued my interest and I watched the show. I was expecting a train wreck, but I like a good freak show, so why not watch! I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. We got to see the human side of these girls. That doesn't men that they weren't moth balls. Far from it in fact. I mean, one of the girls couldn't identify her state flag. That's a special kind of special right there.

One of the girls stood out to me, though. Miss Utah, Jill Stevens. This girl was hardly typical. She didn't know how to put on make up and she could barely walk a catwalk, but she's a decorated combat medic, she served in Afghanistan, and is a member of the Utah National Guard. This woman was a woman. She was intelligent, personable, and clever, and she didn't look like a barbie doll. She was, in short, everything that I believe the new Miss America should be. None of this "there are no schools in France and I want world peace for the dolphins" crap.

It seems that the rest of the viewers agreed with me. The judges didn't let her through to the top ten, but the American public, who was given the chance to vote one girl in as the 11th contestant, liked her enough to vote her in.

So what do the judges do? They get rid of her immediately. That shows how much the Miss America judges care about what the public thinks. I really have to wonder how this will effect the future ratings of the show? Personally, I hope that this is end of it. They've proven that these girls aren't the best that America has to offer. When they had the opportunity to let a perfect example of femininity win, what do they do? They kick her to the curb.

I sincerely hope that this is the end of it. Because, honestly, I'm tired of the parade of brainless barbie dolls. I want to see a real woman win, and that chance disappeared with Miss Utah.

Unfortunately, the winner was Miss Michigan; a woman I don't even remember from the TLC special.
