9 July 2018 15:43I totally forgot to post my July update. June wasn't quite as productive as I would have liked, but I did finally decide on what I'm doing for July's Camp NaNo. It's going to be a canon divergence Fallout 4 fic. While I love the game (actually more than New Vegas), there are a lot of balls that were dropped - random encounters left unexplorable, factions being missing during certain plotlines (I'm looking at you Blind Betrayal), planned plots that were dropped (again, Blind Betrayal), and there is no ability to negotiate things rather than immediately fighting.
So I started working on an idea, but then I realized that an expanded version of my own game made no sense. Why would Nora spend all of her time running hither and yon to help the factions instead of immediately going after Kellogg Courier-style. There was just too much for one person. So I decided to avoid the fridging (because let's face it, you're clearly supposed to be playing Nate) and have both parents survive. And then, to my horror, I discovered that I can't write Nate.
I kind of found myself fighting it and trying desperately to write Nate and force him into the story, but I finally gave up. I decided that Nate as husband was the problem, so I made him Nora's brother and then found that I still couldn't write him (he may as well have been a mannequin).
So, after much fighting and fretting over all of this, I finally decided to say screw it and I took everything in a totally different direction. Now instead of Nate and Nora exiting the vault we have Morgan and her sister Jack leaving the vault and setting out to find Morgan's son and save the Commonwealth. Oh, and everyone got out of the Vault with them, because I never liked the reasoning given for their deaths.
And that's the plan. I'm starting this Fallout 4 AU fic because I need to get away from the Transformers fandom for a little bit. Not that I don't love it, I just need to get out of my own head for a little while.
