This past Saturday I went to go see Sin City with oni_neko. ... I realize that many, many people think that this is an great movie, but for me, it was painful. I think that if I wasn't oni_neko's ride, I would have walked out.
Now, on the plus side, the movie was visually stunning. I loved the use of key colour elements to evoke an emotional response, loved te use of the negative cut outs in key scenes, and I loved the general cinematography. However, the acting was terrible, the writing was awful, and the edit was terrible. While I'm sure this made a great comic book, the disjointed style does not transfer to film properly. The graphic violence was uncalled for and almost forced in some areas. Lastly, it struck me as a film noire by someone who had no clue what film noire is.
Half-way through the movie the couple next to us walked out, and I can honestly say that I wish I was with them. However, all that said, I did enjoy my evening, and the cinematic style was ingenious.
I just wish I could understand why the rest of you like it so much ...
