First things first *hem hem*:
Happy Birthday
lstarrunner !
And secondly:
Merry Christmas!
And also a very happy, albeit belated Yule, Chanukah, and Eid ul-Adha.
And now on to the rest:
Christmas this year was good. We actually had my mother here this year, which was nice. Last year was terribly rushed, since my mother was travelling to the States to spend time with my Tante Julienne and Bill while my Aunt Jacqueline was in Paris. It ended up meaning that we had a rushed and quiet Christmas Eve and then packed mom off on Christmas day.
This year was also quiet, just the immediate family. We did have a slight problem with the turkey, though. My mom ordered an 18 pound bird but when she arrived at the Butchery she found that they had only received small turkeys. So they sold her two 12-pounders for the price of an 18 and suggested that she cook them both, side-by-side. We ended up just cooking the one and we'll have the other later; this means that there are no left-overs, however. I will admit that it was strange looking at a 12-pound turkey. As I was growing up we never had anything smaller than a 20-pounder, so, to me, this was a sad little roasting chicken with delusions of grandeur.
It ended up being a very pleasant meal in the end, though. We tried a couple of new recipes; the dates (stuffed with almond and goat cheese and wrapped in bacon) were definite winners but the stuffed mushrooms were less than stellar. And I made a lemon meringue pie from scratch for desert.
After all the work of prep and such, it actually turned into a nice and relaxing couple of days off (albeit tiring). Now I work for two days, get two days off, then work for a day, then get a day off, then work for three days and get two days off, and then it's, finally, back to normal. ... This is going to wreak havoc on my schedule, but I don't think I'd change anything :)
