Apparently, we are now too stupid to be able to lower the water temperature coming out of our taps. Water has to be heated to 150 degrees celcius to keep the bacteria at bay, but now the Ontario government has mandated that the water coming out of tap cannot be any hotter than 120 degrees celcius. This requires us to install a valve on all fawcetts that lowers the temperature. Now here's the rub: the valves cost over $150 EACH (plus installation and taxes). This is all, allegedly, caused by the fact that some seniors have been scalded. The story going around is far more interesting, however. Apparently all of these valves are being made by one company. Now here's the question, is the owner of the company a friend of someone in parliament? Do note that not State in the US and no Province in Canada has legislation like this.
Is it really so difficult to make our own decisions and our own mistakes? Do we really need the state to be a bunch of nannies? I do agree that there have to be safety legislations put in place. After all, we can't have stoves exploding and baby carriages flipping over, but water temperature?
How far are we going to go? Will they mandate how hot I can make my food? I might burn my mouth after all. Will they mandate what type of clothes I can wear? After all, I might be allergic to wool or get a sunburn.
Honestly, do they really think that we are morons? And why are these idiots who are complaining being listened to? My water burned me because I could be bothered to turn on the cold. My food burned me because I can't because I can't eb botehred to blow in it.
I mean honestly.
And now, since the gun registration worked so well, they now want us to register our horses with a 15 digit registration number. They want a tag put on the horse's ear. This is the same group that allowed a man to register his drill as a gun.
I'm starting to see why aimisdirty is always so ranty ...

Date: 23 Jun 2005 17:12 (UTC)The reason the plumbers are pissed is that it takes so long to install these regulators that they are loosing business. Apparently, this was put in place last year.
It certainly does explain why we can't get decently hot water in our new house.

Date: 23 Jun 2005 18:15 (UTC)But in Canada, this is unfortunately all too common. Instead of educating people or dealing with the root cause for the incident, folks in the Canadian government (Federal and Provincial) get 'ban happy'.
Safety legislation is different from nanny-state legislation. I don't want either government butting into my life to a degree where they infringe on normal day-to-day activities and basic freedoms. Though this is the fault of a lot of voters as well. There is always a vocal group that /demands/ the government do something. And the government in question normally goes 'meh, what will people miss the least'?
